What Makes Roller Blind Measuring Different From Other Blind Types?
Roller blinds appear straightforward, but several decisions — roll direction, chain side, and whether to split a wide window across two blinds — all interact with the measurements you take and how the blind behaves once installed. Getting the measuring right from the start means understanding these decisions before you order.
How Do You Measure a Roller Blind for a Standard Window?
What measurements does newblinds.co.uk require for a roller blind?
The measurements required are width and drop. For recess fitting, take three width measurements: at the top, middle, and bottom of the recess. Take two drop measurements: at the left and right sides of the recess. Enter the smallest of each set. For exact size or face fitting, enter the finished dimensions you require. See newblinds.co.uk/en/blog/show/measuring-your-window-recess-for-a-blind for further guidance on recess measuring.
Does the chain side affect the measurements?
The chain side does not affect the measurements you provide. It does affect the fabric width, which is managed during manufacture. You must specify whether you want the chain on the left or the right of the blind when ordering.
What Is Roll Direction and Why Does It Matter?
What is the difference between standard roll and reverse roll?
Standard roll means the fabric rolls from the window side of the tube. This positions the fabric closer to the glass, which improves the effectiveness of blackout fabrics by reducing the gap between the fabric edge and the window. Reverse roll means the fabric rolls from the room side of the tube, positioning the blind closer to the room.
When should you choose reverse roll?
If your window has handles, cranks, or locking mechanisms that project into the space directly below the roller tube, reverse roll allows the fabric to clear these obstructions as it is lowered. Standard roll may catch on projecting hardware.
Does roll direction affect the measurements?
No. The measurements you provide remain the same regardless of roll direction. You specify your preference when ordering.
Is it possible to eliminate all light ingress with a roller blind?
You will always experience some degree of light ingress around the edges of a roller blind, regardless of whether a blackout fabric is selected or whether standard or reverse roll is chosen. Roller blinds do not seal against the frame. If total blackout is a priority, consider a blind type with side channels, or complement the roller blind with additional window dressing.
What If My Window Is Too Wide for a Single Roller Blind?
Can a wide window be covered by splitting across two roller blinds?
Yes. If your window width exceeds the maximum available for a single blind, the opening can be covered using two or more blinds side by side. Each blind is manufactured individually, so each requires its own measurements.
An intermediate bracket is available that sits between two adjacent blinds, minimising the gap between them to 15mm. This bracket requires specific deductions during manufacture and is not available to order directly through the website. Contact customer.services@newblinds.co.uk or estimates@newblinds.co.uk for assistance with split blind orders.
How Do You Measure Roller Blinds for Specific Window Types?
UPVC windows: Measure carefully around any handles, locks, and trickle vents within the recess. Consider reverse roll if handles project significantly into the space below the tube.
Windows with tiles: Tiles on the window sill or surrounding the recess may reduce the effective fitting depth and can affect bracket positioning. Measure within the tiled area, not to the raw frame beneath.
Patio doors: For patio doors, decide whether you want a single blind covering the full opening or individual blinds per door panel. A single blind covering a full patio door opening may exceed maximum width limits, in which case two blinds will be required.
Sloped windows: Roller blinds are not generally recommended for steeply sloped windows. For skylight or roof window applications, see the skylight blinds measuring guide.
